A collection of glass lantern slides relating to Captain Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913, the majority of the photographs taken by Herbert G. Ponting (1870-1935), various scenes, including portraits of members of the expedition at work or posed, images of the Terra Nova, landscape views, animals including ponies, penguins and seals, and map images, each slide 3 1/4 x 3 1/4in. (8 x 8cms) 115 slides in total; together with a brass-bound magic lantern. NB The majority of the slides were photographed by Herbert G. Ponting, who was a travel photographer and the first official photographer to ever participate in a polar expedition. Scott wrote in his journal ''We shall have a cinematograph and photographic record that will be absolutely new in expeditionary work''. See illustration
