A Queen Victoria South Africa medal 1879, awarded to 1257 Private Robert Norris, 2nd Battalion 24th Regiment of Foot (2nd Warwickshire Regiment), naming either private or reassigned, with ribbon, no bars.

Robert Norris was born in Liverpool in the County of Lancashire February 1858, baptised 11 September 1859 to Edward and Margaret Norris of Henry Street, Liverpool, Edward Norris brass founder. Norris attained fourth class army certificate 24th March 1886 and third class certificate 14th December 1886 and employment as a general labourer. He enlisted on 20th February 1877 to the 2nd Lancashire Militia. He was hospitalised in the September of the same year with pneumonia and gonorrhoea and was posted to South Africa on the 1 July 1878. He saw action with the 2nd of the 24th Regiment of Foot during operations against the Gcalekas Tribes arriving on the Eastern Frontier on 10th March 1878 then Natal 6th August 1878. After their victory at Isandlwana the Zulus attacked Rorkes Drift where Norris was serving with the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment on 22nd and 23rd January 1879. He was granted good conduct pay on 22nd February 1879.

TELEPHONE: Telephone bids are only available for lots estimated at over £250. Lots which are bought for less than £250 via telephone bidding will incur a £10 (plus VAT) per lot charge. We only accept telephone bidding registrations up to the day prior to the lot in question going under the hammer. At the point of registration all new bidders will be required to submit proof of identification and address. This can be either a current driver's licence or ID card showing the registered address, or a passport together with a recent utility bill bearing the registered address which can be emailed to a.orgill@andersonandgarland.com. Only when this identification is received can the registration process be completed and your telephone line will then be secured for you. As the number of telephone lines are limited, early booking is recommended. (We also recommend that you leave an “emergency cover bid" in case we are unable to reach you by telephone).
