Fine Chinese lacquer figure of Guanyin, marked ''SHEN SHAO AN LANGKEE, FOOCHOW CHINA'', the goddess with flowing robes having her right hand raised and her left hand to her front holding a gilded bottle form vase, head turned slightly to her left with serene expression, standing on wave scroll base with flowerheads, height 38cm. PROVENANCE: Herbert Chatley, D.Sc., M.I.C.E., (1885-1955), thence by descent. Herbert Chatley was educated at Cambridge House Grammar School and then studied at the Northern Polytechnic of London University. His ensuing career involved a combination of commercial and academic positions. Before leaving Britain for China in 1909 Dr. Chatley held posts under the borough engineer in Fulham followed by a lectureship in Civil Engineering at the Municipal College, Portsmouth. Dr. Chatley was only in his mid-twenties when he accepted the Professorship of Civil Engineering of the Chinese Government Engineering College at Longshan, thus commencing a long association with the country with which he was to spend the principal part of his career. In 1915 Dr. Chatley returned to commercial work and moved south to serve for a year with the Nanking-Hunan Railway as District Engineer. However it is for his authoritative work in dredging whilst with the Whangpoo (or Huangpu) Conservancy Board where Dr. Chatley is especially acclaimed. His valuable studies of the mud and silt in the Whangpoo and Yangtze estuaries and his supervision of the locally built dredging plant gained him much profession recognition and he became Engineer-in-Chief of the Board in 1928. On retiring from that position in 1937, the Chinese Government honoured him publicly with a 2nd Class ''Brilliant Jade'' (Conservancy Division) Order. Upon his return to London, Dr. Chatley practised as an engineering consultant and in 1940 joined the Department of Civil Engineering to the Admiralty as Superintending Civil Engineer. During this time he was closely associated with the Invasion's Mulberry Harbour scheme and it was for this work that Dr. Chatley was awarded the Legion of Honour (Officer) by the French Government. Dr. Chatley died in 1955. He was author of several books including ''Studies in Molecular Force'' and ''Problem of Flight'' and approximately two hundred technical articles and papers.
