A RETIRED postman who made tens of thousands of pounds through gambling has been forced to sell off the art collection he amassed after his luck turned.

Alan Briscoe, 60, from Washington, had a collection including a signed print by Damien Hirst, more than 30 pictures by the society photographer Lord Lichfield and work by Australian artist Sydney Nolan.

The Journal reported on Friday how the art is due to go under the hammer with Anderson and Garland Auctioneers in Westerhope, Newcastle, at the end of the month. more

MORE than 30 pictures by the celebrated 1960s society photographer Lord Lichfield will be auctioned in Newcastle this month.

John Anderson of Anderson and Garland Auctioneers said it was the largest collection of Lord Patrick Lichfield’s work he had ever seen.

The photographs previously belonged to a private collector from Washington, Tyne and Wear, who put them up for sale along with several modern prints, including work by Damien Hirst and Australian artist Sir Sydney Nolan. more

A military regiment in County Durham is auctioning its silverware collection to raise money for a memorial.

The ornate silverware, which once graced the tables at the officers' mess, will be sold to raise money for a bronze statue.

Durham Light Infantry (DLI) hopes the collection, which includes a solid silver punch bowl and posy vases, will fetch between £40,000 and £60,000 more

Vintage shoe collection sold at auction for £1100

Vintage shoes collected by a man during his 55-year career in the footwear industry have gone under the hammer in Newcastle.

Brian Bennett salvaged items of old stock which had been forgotten about or had gone out of date.

The 20 pairs of shoes, clogs and boots, dating back to the 1900s, were sold at auction at Anderson and Garland.

Vintage shoes sell for £1100 at auction

A collection of vintage shoes including worker's hobnail boots, handmade clogs and leather football boots has sold for £1100 at auction.

The pairs are mostly from the 1940s and 50s, nearly all unworn. They were collected by Brian Bennett, a former travelling shoe salesman, from shops around the country. In most cases, they would otherwise have been thrown away.

The pairs were all sold as separate lots to one buyer at Anderson and Garland auction house in Newcastle.
